The Mont Gerbier de Jonc is a "suc" of the Monts d'Ardèche: sucs are ancient volcanoes whose very thick lava has cooled without having time to flow. As it crystallized, it turned into a rock called phonolite, which is used for roofs made of lauzes (example: the Bourlatier Farm, 3 km away). Phonolith is also used nowadays for music on lithophone.
